After all, it's not as though you wear the exact same outfit every day so why should you wear the same glasses every day?

2: Spare Pair

So this one might be a little more practical.

Have you ever arrived into the office and realised you will have to suffer through the day as you have left your glasses at home?

Do you ever have the issue of locating your glasses when sitting down to read?

Invest in an inexpensive pair of spare reading glasses that you can keep in the office, by the bed or in the car for those moments when everything seems lost.

3: Prescription Sunglasses

This will solve the ongoing swap between you favourite sunglasses and prescription glasses (that you can actually read or see out of)!

Isn't it frustrating being that dag at the beach wearing your sunglasses OVER your prescription glasses just so you can enjoy reading your book or the weekend paper?

What about driving in to the harsh sun then trying to read the road signs?

Use your benefits to put towards a pair of lenses that transition when exposed to sunlight, or better yet you could splash out on some prescription sunglasses!

4: Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are increasing in popularity in Australia. Contact lenses have come along way in the last five years, with the latest technology focusing on providing the perfect balance of all day comfort and moisture.

Contact lenses can be prescribed and worn in addition to owning glasses and they open up a range of possibilities for people to partake in activities where frames can be an interference such as swimming, sports, dancing.

Contact lenses are dependent upon your prescription, so speak to your local optometrist about a contact lens consultation.

Need a Contact Lens Consult?

5: Eyewear for Sports

Are you active outside or involved in a specialty sport where great vision is key to performance?

Perhaps it is golf, archery, or even sailing.

Sports eyewear can be tailored to assist with your accuracy whilst at the same time protect your eyes from the harmful UV rays whilst outdoors.

Your Health Fund Benefits reset every 12 months. This could be at the end of the year, on the membership anniversary year or the end of financial year. Make the most of your Health Fund and look to claim your optical benefits with Eyecare Plus. Eyecare Plus are independently owned Optometry Practices and each one of them can assist you with all of your eyewear and eyecare needs and can help you make the most out of your Health Fund Benefits.

Miami Style Show

Yesterday we had our annual style show to give our VIP clients a taste of what we're dishing up this Spring/Summer.Everyone that made it to the special event got an early first look into our latest collection of designer eye wear and signature sunglasses whilst sipping on delicious punch and enjoying some tasty nibbles. Impaired vision and blindness can also occur in older people. But the good news is that, it is possible to prevent the onset of these age-related eye diseases with a healthy nutrition and lifestyle.

Apart from diet, it’s important to protect eyes from exposure to UV sun rays, extreme temperatures and strong winds. Get medically examined regularly to diagnose if any issue occurs with the eyes. Diabetes increases risk of eye disease related to aging, causing diabetic retinopathy.

Boost your diet in these simple ways:

1. Whole grains and cereals

Include whole grains and cereals in diet to improve eye health. Refined foods like white flour and sugar in breads can increase the risk of age-related eye diseases. Eat whole grains like multi-grain bread, bran bread, whole-wheat flakes and other foods rich in fiber. Fiber slows the digestion and absorption of starch and sugar. It also keeps the stomach full, limiting the amount of calories you consume daily. Half of daily grains and cereals should be 100 percent whole grains.

2. Healthy fats

Fats are a healthy component of diet and they should not be totally excluded. Cook food in polyunsaturated fats like vegetable oils. Omega-3 essential fatty acids are present in fish, walnuts, canola oil and flaxseed oil. They prevent dryness of the eyes and cataract. Fish and seafood should be taken twice weekly. You can also take flax oil everyday. Use canola oil for cooking. Eat walnuts as a snack to stay healthy.

3. High-quality protein

Fat content in meat and cooking method to prepare them makes a meal healthy or unhealthy. Skip saturated fats in red meats and dairy products. Lean meat is good. Fish, legumes, nuts and eggs provide good proteins that are healthy for the eyes. They also give zinc. Eggs contain lutein.

4. Cut down sodium

Cataract can occur because of a high sodium diet. Eat less salt in meals. Avoid canned and packaged foods that have a high content of sodium. Take less than 2000 mg of sodium per day. Eat fresh foods instead of canned or frozen. Apples are the best fruit for people on low-sodium diet.

5. Plenty of water

Staying hydrated provides enough moisture to the body and keeps the eyes healthy. Eat low-fat dairy foods like skimmed milk and healthy drinks like vegetable juices, fresh fruit juices, non-caffeinated herbal tea and plain water. Take at least 2 liters of water daily in Winter and 4 liters in hot weather depending upon your lifestyle.

6. Vitamins for the eyes

Eat foods rich in vitamins such as vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene and zinc. These nutrients are directly associated with the health of the eyes. Include them in daily diet to get the benefits and avoid eye disorders.

7. Vision supplements

Sometimes, diet is deficient in essential nutrients. It’s good to take them as supplements. Take multi-vitamins and minerals daily. Choose the best brand recommended by a physician, dietician or an eye-specialist.

The above-mentioned seven dietary guidelines and regular eye examinations with your optometrist will help you keep your eyes healthy through the years.

Coco Song - In Store Now

We're so excited to announce that we now have exclusive Coco Song Eyewear in store! Macular degeneration is the degeneration or destruction of the macula which is the light sensitive tissue present near the centre of the retina. The tissue lines the back of the eye and is responsible for sharp, central vision that helps us see the finer details of the object that is straight ahead. When your central vision is affected, it becomes difficult to perform simple but important tasks such as reading, driving or even recognising faces. As damage to the macula occurs gradually as we get older, it is also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Usually affecting those who are over 50 years old, AMD is a major cause of severe vision loss and blindness in Australia.Types of Macular Degeneration There are two types of AMD:

Dry AMD: A more common form of AMD affecting about 90% of patients, dry macular degeneration results from normal aging processes causing thinning of the macular tissues. Apart from thinning, small yellow or white pieces of fatty protein called drusen may also be deposited in the macula hampering its normal functioning. As the thinning or deposition occurs gradually with advancing age, the visual changes are also gradual and can be detected at an early stage by careful monitoring and observation. Some of the early symptoms of dry AMD include blurry or hazy vision and difficulty in recognising faces until they are very close. Early diagnosis can prevent the progression of the disease into the more severe wet form described below.

Wet AMD: Though less common with only about 10% of those diagnosed with AMD affected, wet AMD is a much more severe form of macular degeneration and is characterised by the formation of abnormal blood vessels beneath the retina. It is also referred to as neovascular AMD due to the formation of new blood vessels under the retina (neo=new). These new blood vessels tend to leak fluid or blood below the macula causing permanent damage to the cells and creating blind spots. The permanent damage occurs at a much faster rate compared to the dry form and thus, early diagnosis and treatment is essential to preserve as much vision as possible. Symptoms include a straight line that appears wavy or black spots in your vision.

High risk factors:

As aging is the most common cause of macular degeneration, if you are over the age of 50, you should have regular eye check-ups with us to detect the disease at the earliest possible time as symptoms may not be very obvious in the early stages.Smoking: Smoking almost triples the risk of developing AMD, especially the fast progressing wet form.Genetics: Family history of AMD tends to increase the risk of the disease in subsequent generations.Race: Caucasians are more prone to macular degeneration than Africans or Americans.Gender: Females are believed to be at a higher risk as compared to males.Other risk factors include hypertension, obesity, high cholesterol, lack of exercise and diets rich in unsaturated fats.

Manifestations of macular degeneration Apart from the initial symptoms mentioned above, other signs and symptoms of macular degeneration are:

Both the types of AMD- dry or wet are painless and lead to blurred or hazy vision.Particular symptoms of dry AMD include black or grey blind spots in the centre of the visual field and in the case of advanced disease, decreased night vision, inability to read or drive, decrease in the brightness of colours and quality of life affected due to inability to perform useful tasks.Specific symptoms related to wet AMD are larger spots of black or grey colour in the central visual field, distorted vision and the size of objects may appear to be different for each eye.

Diagnostic tools To diagnose macular degeneration, we will perform a complete eye exam in addition to the following diagnostic tests:

Visual acuity test to check your vision clarity.
Amsler grid: The straight lines of the checkerboard pattern of this grid appear wavy, missing or distorted to patients having AMD. The Amsler grid is an exam that you can conduct at home on a regular basis. Pick up a grid from us or through the Macular Disease Foundation Australia
Angiography to detect abnormal, leaking blood vessels in case of wet AMD.Other extensive diagnostic techniques include optical coherence tomography and retinal photography.

Treatment Although no cure is yet known to reverse the permanent damage caused to the macular cells, treatment can be aimed to prevent the progression or advancement of the disease to preserve as much vision as possible.

Wet AMD is best treated with anti-VEGF medication. Anti-VEGF is delivered to the macula region via injection and may need to be administered every 3 months in the early stages to prevent further vision loss. Anti-VEGF works by stopping new blood vessel growth into the macula. New blood vessels leak causing fluid in the area, hence the ‘wet’ prefix.Dry AMD may be prevented from advancing to the wet form by taking certain nutritional supplements of Vitamin A, C and E, antioxidants and zinc. In addition, eating a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables and fish high in omega3 can also be beneficial in slowing down the advancement of the disease. Usually one eye is more affected in the dry form so patients may be able to lead a near-normal life by following certain lifestyle changes.

Prevention A healthy lifestyle of eating a balanced diet, regular exercise, no smoking, keeping a check on your weight and blood pressure, proper and regular eye examinations can help in preventing this disabling disease.

Visual Rehabilitation To help manage your visual loss, ask us about low vision devices such as magnifiers, high-powered reading glasses, talking watches and calculators to assist with everyday tasks.

As AMD affects all aspects of day to day living, those with AMD may also develop lowered self-esteem or depression and require constant support of their family and friends to cope up with their visual disability. With fewer reflections, more light passes through the lens to the eye enhancing vision and making lenses look more transparent and attractive. You’ll be able to see from the photo below, the difference between glasses that have AR coating and glasses that don’t. The reflection becomes particularly obvious in photos, videos and in brightly lit environments.

The visual benefits of AR coating include less glare and sharper vision. Many people complain of halos or stars around lights at night time which is caused by glare or discomfort during prolonged use of electronic devices. AR coating reduces this glare resulting in sharper vision and comfort. Here's the difference AR coating can make during night time.

Our premium anti-reflective coating also has antistatic and hydrophobic properties incorporated which prevents water spots from forming and makes lenses easier to clean.

Some people find that their glasses are harder to clean with AR coating. It does take a tiny bit more effort but it’s definitely worth it. We recommend cleaning with a lens spray and every so often washing your glasses in warm water with a mild detergent then drying with a non-abrasive lint free cloth or lens cloth. We have lens spray in store for $5 and offer free refills.

If you have any questions on anti-reflective coating or anything else eye related, feel free to pop in and see us at Eyecare Plus Miami or contact us!

Protect your eyes with Crizal UV - endorsed by the Cancer Council

We proudly prescribe Crizal UV lenses, the only prescription lenses endorsed by Cancer Council. Depending on your prescription, you could be seeing clearly without glasses in as little as 3-4 days!

How does it actually work?

An Ortho-K contact lens reshapes the very top layer of the cornea. The cornea is the clear film over the coloured part of your eye and it makes up approx. 70% of the power of the eye. Therefore, any change in the corneal shape has a big impact on the overall power of the eye. The very top layer, called the corneal epithelium, can be moved around and that’s essentially what an Ortho-K lens does – moves it around so the shape of the cornea coincides with your prescription. The theory is simple but requires accurate corneal topography and specialised Ortho-K lenses to get predictable and sustainable results.

Moving the corneal epithelial cells is non-permanent. In other words, if you leave your Ortho-K lenses out for 2-3 days, the epithelial cells start to migrate back to their original location. By about day 7 everything will be back to how it was before you started Ortho-K.

What are some of the advantages of Ortho-K?

No glasses or contact lenses during the day means unrestricted vision for your active lifestyle. Imagine what it would be like to go surfing or swimming and not worry about your contact lenses falling out!

Apart from the obvious vision improvements, Ortho-K actually slows the rate of myopia (short-sightedness) progression. Particularly worrisome in children and young teens, myopia can progress quite quickly depending on environmental and genetic factors.

And what about dry eye issues with conventional contact lenses – do you find that your eyes are red, dry and tired and the end of the day? Are you sick of using lots of eye lubricating drops with your contacts? Well Ortho-K has none of those problems – your lenses are in when your eyes are closed so no dry eye issues!

What now?

Come in for your free assessment or read more and we’ll start you on the road that leads to freedom from glasses.

CONTACT US

World Sight Day Challenge - 9th October

At Eyecare Plus Miami, we care about protecting your vision. Before we start to discuss how blue light can affects us, it’s probably a good idea to define what blue light is and where it comes from.

What is blue light?

Blue light, also known as ‘near UV’ is in the wavelengths range of approx. 400 to 500 nanometres. Pre-industrial revolution blue light was primarily from one source only – the sun. These days we’re exposed to it from many artificial sources such as LED lighting, TV screens, computers screens and smart phones.

For a healthy life, we need some exposure to blue light but it’s highly likely that we’re getting far too much these days.

What effect does blue light have on the eyes and body?

Studies as far back as the early 1980’s showed intense exposure to blue light caused changes to the cells in the macula. More recent studies suggest that long-term exposure to blue light increases the risk of macular denegation and cataracts (blue light causes changes to the lens in the eye).

Away from the eyes, blue light is believed to have an impact on sleep patterns (our circadian rhythm). Historically the first light of the day was a trigger to wake us up. However, these days we’re looking at devices that emit blue light well into the night. The body can’t distinguish whether the light source is natural or artificial, confusing this light as a sunrise and affecting our circadian rhythm.

How can we reduce blue light exposure?

Having recognised the adverse effects that increased exposure to blue light can have on the eyes and body, the leading spectacle lens companies, namely Essilor and Hoya, have recently introduced blue light blocking coatings on their lenses. These coatings look like standard antireflection coatings but have the added advantage of blocking blue and UV light. So if you spend many hours a day in front of your PC, laptop, iPad or smartphone, especially if you work on these devices into the night, a blue blocking coating on your lenses could help reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration and/or cataracts, and improve your sleep patterns.

At Eyecare Plus Miami, we recommend and use Essilor's Crizal Prevencia antireflective coating. This coating can be added to any of the Essilor lenses. Crizal Prevencia lenses are the first lenses to offer selective protection from harmful blue light and UV rays, while allowing beneficial light through. Ensure the lens is not inside out (if it’s inside out, the edges turn out, rather than up. Think ‘saucer’ as the wrong way and ‘bowl’ as the correct way).Look straight at your eye in the mirror. Pull down your lower eyelid with the middle finger of the same hand.Pull the top lid up with the index finger of the other hand.Gently place the lens onto the clear part of the eye – the cornea. The cornea is the clear film that covers the coloured part of your eye and where the contact lens sits.Remove your index finger and release your eyelid.Look down, closing your eyes gently. The lens will centre itself.

Removal

Using an eye lubricant before removal can sometimes aid in the process. Only use drops that are specifically designed for contact lenses.Look up and pull the lower lid down with the middle finger of your preferred hand.Place your index finger on the lower edge of your lens, and slide the lens down to the white of your eye.Squeeze the lens lightly between your index finger and thumb and remove gently.Once removed, if the edges of your lens stick together, place a few drops of multi-purpose solution on the lens and rub gently until the edges separate.

Caring for your Contact Lenses

Contact lenses always need to be stored in an approved disinfecting and storage solution. The latest multi-purpose solutions, such as OPTI-FREE® EverMoist® or AMO RevitaLens® Octuec, offer excellent efficacy against micro-organism without compromising on ease of use and comfort.

Cleaning

Remove one of your contact lenses and place in the palm of your hand. Cover with multi-purpose solution, aiming for a puddle about the size of a 10 cent piece.Rub the lens between your index finger and the palm of your hand, ensuring that both the front and back surface of the lens is thoroughly cleaned.Place the contact lens into the appropriate side of your contact lens case and fill with solution, ensuring the contact lens is fully covered.Follow the same steps for the opposite contact lens.Your contact lenses will now disinfect and rehydrate (min of 4 hours is required).

Putting your contact lenses back on after disinfection

When putting contact lenses back on, no rubbing is required. Just remove from the case and place onto your eye.Once both contact lenses are on your eyes, discard the used solution, give the lens wells a rub with a clean finger, rinse with solution and let the contact lens case air dry. The best way is to let your lens case air dry face down on a clean tissue.

NB: it is essential that new solution is used every time you clean your lenses. Do not ‘top-up’ old solution as this greatly increases your risk of contamination. Contact lenses can stay in the same solution for up to one week if the contact lens case lid is not opened.

Replace your contact lens storage case every month. All multipurpose solution value packs (3 month supply of solution) come with new storage cases. These tips will help guide you, but if you have any concerns or queries, please feel free to contact us.

Pterygia and the Surfer

What is a Pterygium? A pterygium (pronounced tear-ridge-y-um, pterygia for plural) is a common eye condition that affects people who spend a lot of time outdoors. It appears as a fleshy, red/pink growth on the border of the white and clear parts of the eye, usually on the side closest to the nose. What causes a pterygium? Most studies now support that long-term exposure to Ultra Violet (UV) light is the main cause of pterygia. When UV light is focussed to the nasal area (which happens when

2014 Style Show - 16th June

RSVP to: miami@eyecareplus.com.au

Macular Degeneration Awareness Week - Conclusion

Here are our three top tips from the week 1.
